Biomass availability and supply in Renfrew County, Ontario
Valley Bio Ltd was engaged by Renfrew County to:
- undertake detailed analysis of crop and fiber processing and management practices
- identify business opportunities within the crop and fiber processing industry
Valley Bio reached these conclusions[1]:
- In a region of Eastern Ontario in which crop production is experiencing marked and steady growth, lack of a substantial crop handling facility is seen as a barrier to expanded field crop production, especially for corn and soybeans.
- Producers are incurring additional costs and county agribusiness is suffering from lost potential revenues.
- Innovation into new and diversified crops is stagnating due to lack of infrastructure for value added processing of agricultural products.
- A major grain handling or processing operation would be viable in the region, but not likely as a traditional elevator business as seen in other areas of Ontario.
- An elevator would not be able to “go it alone” in Renfrew county due to a lack of critical mass of any one single commodity.
Previously, in March 2006, Valley Bio prepared a report in response to growing interest in the possible uses of heritage wood residuals and agricultural residuals[2].
A plan devised by Ensyn Corporation seeks to minimize the trucking costs of sustainably harvestable pulpwood or sawmill residues in Renfrew County[3].
- Appendix 5 locates possible pellet plant sites[4]
- Appendix 6 locates possible pellet and wood chip burner sites[5]
