Ethanol

From MoxyWiki

Ethanol (CH3CH2OH): A vehicle fuel typically made from fermenting sugar derived from biomass (usually corn, sugarcane or wheat) that can replace ordinary petroleum in modest percentages (blends) in spark-ignition engines or can be used in pure form in specially modifed vehicles. Nearly all ethanol is produced by fermenting plant sugars and starches (or hydrolysed cellulose or hemicellulose in the future) - also called bioethanol; however, it can also be produced from fossil feedstocks.[1]

Fuel ethanol is ethanol intended for fuel use. Fuel ethanol is denatured (made unfit for human consumption), usually prior to transport from the ethanol production facility, by adding 2 to 5 volume percent petroleum, typically pentanes plus or conventional motor gasoline. Fuel ethanol is used principally for blending in low concentrations with motor gasoline as an oxygenate or octane enhancer. In high concentrations, it is used to fuel alternative-fuel vehicles specially designed for its use[2].
